Mini folk with ECO club

With a pipe cleaner base and scraps of fabric, old beads and some elastic our ECO club members loved this old favourite of mine! This girl made a bride as a gift.

Sculpture club draws

Tuesday evening's Super Sculpture club (including two new members) enjoyed a wild drawing session to generate ideas for the one super sculpture they are going to create each. Bats, people, dragons, trees, horses, dogs and more were represented in chalkly pastels, black charcoal, white chalk and greasy crayons.

Five Rawlins students came to help out, which was fantastic.

Civil Rights Paper Sculpture

I was asked to work with year 7 pupils at Humphrey Perkins High School as part of their CIVIL RIGHTS DAY. We discussed ideas and feelings about imprisonment and freedom. Using pastels and paper this short but exciting workshop produced some effective 3D posters illustrating the results of our discussion.

It is always fantastic when community arts methods are brought into the context of themes and issues in this way. Art and creativity are channels through which we can all express a voice, regardless of ability, age or even language.

Mountsorrel Eco Club 'The Wild in 3D' 2

I don't know why these pics are all coming out sideways?!? Sorry!

Mountsorrel Eco Club 'The Wild in 3D'

Last night's Eco club, attended by very enthusiastic year 5's, saw us experiment with the concept of 3D art using old wildlife and garden magazines, chip trays, leftover acetate and plastic folders and glue. Each participant discussed the idea of background and foreground and decided on a sea, jungle or countryside theme. Then, images were cut and torn from the magazines and the entire inside of the chip tray was covered in the dense scenery chosen.

Then, we cut acetate to fit the front of the tray and carefully cut and glued on images to provide a foreground. Attaching this to the tray with tape, the images popped out creating that 'wow' factor that makes you so glad you are working in community art!!

SuPer scUlpture sTartS

Last night saw the first session of SUPER SCULPTURE take place with 11 participants aged from just 5 to 11 years. We looked at sculptures, sculptors and played a 'smart' style game where everyone had a box of materials and had to create a sculpture based on the types of images that had inspired them.

Screen Printing workshop with Ross Brind

Ross Brind and Susie Brady ran a t-shirt printing workshop here at Rawlins for the grand finale of art camp until the summer. Using iconic imagery and silk screens each participant created an absolutely fantastic t-shirt to wear.

Look out for news on Ross's specialist workshops for the key stage three art campers over the summer

ArT CaMp iS cOOL...(it's official!)

Recycled jewellery collections

Pixies in jars!

A fantastic art activity! First we made little pixies from pipe cleaners and scraps. Then we collected seeds, stones, little leaves etc. and we put the pixie and it's 'belongings' in the jar (glued). Then we created old looking lids from paper soaked in watered down brown paint secured with raffia.

Pop up monsters with the Da Vinci's

This mornings challenge: a pop up monster. It took hours to work out but the results were amazing..these lie flat and pop up magically..amazing!

Wax resist with the Picasso's

We call our youngest group the Picasso's because of their wonderfully free use of imagery. These wax resist drawings show what I mean...

Chick prints

Today was LOVELY. These chick prints were good old fashioned potato prints with a funky finish, mostly through using brightly coloured and corrugated cards. We made gift tags with raffia and bags and cards with them too. We also used a wax resist favourite (crayons!) with a dark wash (watered down poster paint) to make the base for some funky eggs. Easy, cheap and very effective!
