scare CROWS at Humphrey's...in progress

Yesterday and today me and Caitlyn ran recycling and wire sculpture workshops with year 7's at Humphrey Perkins. The brief was to create birds and colourful creatures for the organic garden. Participants learned how to create a metal structure with plastic embellishments for decorative pieces. Found plastics like bottle tops blended with disguarded wires and carrier bags.

Sculpture Exhibition at Rawlins

My Super sculpture course ended in a fabulous private view exhibition yesterday, which was attended by around 20 parents and other guests. Visitors saw a display of unique pieces as well as photographs of the work in progress. Children aged 5 to 11 were so proud to show people around and offer refreshments. I overheard many complimentary conversations and listened to the young artists talking about their work. They all deserved to show off such well finished sculptures and I hope many of them will join me for another course in the Autumn.

Mixed media me's

This project is about halfway done now. We meet at Highgate, Sileby, after school and the group paint faces onto trays, plates, terracotta bowls and even metal spoons! We use acrylic and each session they get better at producing quality likenesses. We colour mix and talk about paintbrush control..that is, when they aren't gossiping!!

Mexican 'day of the dead' flowers

It's hard to express how happy this workshop made me!! Mexicans honour their dead with incredible shrines made, in the main, from these recycled paper and plastic flowers. The children here are aged just 6 and 7 proving that any age can manage such fabulous results.

Beer bottle tourists

Beer bottles provided the base for these brilliant British holidaymakers. The group (aged 10 and 11 years) used the bottle for the body and built up limbs and fat with wire and newspaper before completely covering in Modroc. Then, carefully painted in acrylic, the figures sit well on a shelf or (here) seat.

Origami masterclass in Wymeswold 'hut'

What a wonderful week! I have been out in this wooden hut, an outdoor classroom, working with groups of children on 5 different themes and art forms. These pictures show the origami masterclass with a 'flying' theme. Stars, aeroplanes, birds, butterflies and rainbows have made the ceiling of the hut come alive with colour.

Garden faces at Sileby

Highgate school in Sileby have started a series of painting workshops with me to create a garden full of faces! After a big chat with the children and some drawing ideas, they decided that they wanted to represent themselves, the past children and the future children of Highgate with a display of happy faces in the garden.

Using terracotta plates, silver trays, plastic lids and even big spoons the participants are carefully painting faces in acrylic which will later be varnished to protect them from the weather.

I will keep you updated on this four week project!
