VOLUNTEERS NEEDED

Would you consider giving up one day of your half term to help at an arts and crafts event at Rawlins? I am looking for people to help run the following workshops:

drawing and painting

sew a badge
make a sketchbook
jewellery making
3D modelling

Each workshop already has a leader- what I am looking for is enthusiastic, helpful folk who can commit to a 10am to 4pm day on Friday 17th February 2012.

GAMES TIME- Olympics arts event in Loughborough

The cultural Olympiad team are offering anyone over the age of 13 the opportunity to be part of a spectacular event taking place in Loughborough Southfields Park on June 9th 2012. You will experience wearing incredible costumes designed by Mahogany, be part of a team of 160 performers and have a role in the 2012 Olympics celebrations. You don't need any experience. The moves you will practice are simple and can be learnt over a few rehearsals.

If you are interested or want to find out more just email me your name and contact details before the end of January. There is no commitment at this stage but we will invite you to an induction session which will help you decide if you want to sign up.

Arts Award success at Rawlins

Last week Rawlins' hosted a joint arts award moderation session with Humphrey Perkins- and I'm delighted to announce that all of the portfolios passed! We are so proud that Arts Award offers a nationally recognised qualification for all students. If anyone between the ages of 11 and 25 want to pursue an arts award, please contact me. My students explored art forms as diverse as marbling, dance, jewellery making, photography, interior design, animation and Manga.

World Community Arts Day 2012

World Community Arts Day 2012. Rawlins College: Friday 17th February. 10am to 4pm, £3.00 each. Booking in advance essential: strickly 100 places available. To book call 01509 622827 or pop into Rawlins on Loughborough Road in Quorn.

On the day you will get to choose 4 out of 8 workshops to participate in. These may include 3D model-making, jewellery design, pin badge faces and flowers, pom-pom making, marbling and drawing and painting.

This will be Rawlins' fourth World Community Arts Day event, each one catering for 100 people of all ages in the area. What makes this one even more exciting is that I am collaborating with the charity Inter Care (www.intercare.org.uk ) which is based locally and supports health care in Africa (Cameroon, Ghana, Tanzania, Malawi, Sierra Leone), so the event can link with these locations in terms of awareness and support. We are working with children all week in the run up to 17th Feb to create artworks and craft pieces which are inspired by the arts and crafts of these places, then on the Friday we open our doors to the public for a large scale community arts day where we will exhibit and sell items to raise funds as well as having up to ten workshops where everyone can make, paint and create. The line ‘art as a catalyst for caring and sharing’ works so well for these plans. We’ll be using that every day in sessions throughout the week to build up to the Friday. As ever, I am over the moon to be linking in with WCAD and the global community around it.

FACE BRITAIN -Olympics and Paralympics art project

Face Britain is a national project that invites all young people in the UK to submit a self-portrait. The artwork will be part of a world record attempt and hopefully the biggest online gallery of self-portraits in the world.

I have already worked with 110 children on this! Here are some examples:

ALL WEEK year 4's at Highgate Primary school, Sileby, have been concluding their exciting POMPEII topic with a series of animations with me and their teacher. The sets alone are worth celebrating but the skill and imagination that have gone into creating miniature stories of these events has been really impressive. Effects like making the scenes fade into darkness using acetates, fire licking the scene using coloured paper and physical shaking of the sets by using clever photography have made these workshops so professional! I can't wait for the showcase event on Friday!

North American Traditional Crafts- Jewellery

A combination of Native American pottery and clothing photographs inspired this jewellery and accessories workshop at Rawlins College last Thursday. Children aged from 7 to 13 enjoyed creating a range of black ink images, bag and hair accessories and feather and cord belts.

Cossington after school art club: tesselation and origami

Last night the children-designed art course at Cossington saw us exploring the mathematical art of tessellation and the Japanese art of origami. It's amazing what we fit into an hour!

Cossington 'Held Together' Day

On Tuesday, Cossington Primary school celebrated the arrival of the Diocese statue of Jesus, bringing the message 'Held Together'. The idea is that the children feel like a family, look at and hold the statue and join more closely with the church.

My role was to work with every child in the school to create a permanent piece of art which reflected the feeling of the day. I chose to do stained glass windows using coloured acetates. The results were beautiful and are to hang in the school hall windows, brightening the room and reminding the children of the way the school is welcoming and full of love.

Burton on the Wolds Traveller Mural

Over the past few days I have been working with travelling children at Burton on the Wolds Primary school to create a mural based on their incredible lifestyle. Designed through consultation with the children, their descriptions, pictures and family owned rides, this mural brings colour and sparkle to the entrance to the school, reflecting the higher than average proportion of traveller children there. Once designed, the children painted the whole mural, with my supervision and encouragement, and showed enormous pride in doing so. Their parents have visited, adding ideas, making this a truly collaborative piece.

Today was my second adult silk painting class, running all day in the art rooms at Rawlins. Eleven participants attended, experimenting with sample pieces, colourways and salting techniques. The final designs were created for silk scarves, silk paintings and even a silk curtain.

End of the day comments included "such a relaxing day, well organised and I am so pleased with what I'm taking home- in fact, I can't believe it was me that painted it!"

Mountsorrel WORLD MAP

Today has seen the epic attempt of Mountsorrel children finishing their huge fabric world map. It took all day of applique practice to finally secure all of the countries, people, landmarks animals and sea creatures to this massive, squishy, tactile map.

Well done to all of the children who had never even tried oversewing before and who suffered a few pricked fingers to contribute to this fantastic project.

Cossington POP UP PAPER workshop

Pop up paper for pop up books, cards and much-more-fun-than-flat messages and signs!This was what the kids at Cossington wanted to learn about- and yesterday they had a whale of a time learning the art of pop up.

To make a pop up image, you need an A4 piece of thin card, folded, an A5 piece of thin card, folded, a pair of scissors and something to draw and colour in with.

On the A5 piece, fold the bottom 3cm backwards. Draw an image on the rest of the card, making it nice and big. Colour in. Next, cut out the image, leaving the folded flap at the bottom. Open the flap and snip the centre fold to the top of the 3cm fold. Position the standing picture in a 'V' shape on the card and glue down. Open and shut your card and watch the popping up magic!

This morning saw a room full of year 8 boys and recycled materials at Woodbrook Vale for my surrealism-inspired sculpture workshop. Techniques and finishes were the focus as we all experimented with manipulating familiar materials like plastic milk bottles and cereal boxes.

Tonight, we are experimenting with wire shapes and fantasy film to create jewellery and mini sculptures. Other sessions will include marbling, paper sculpture and beads, gift boxes and using found materials and items to design bespoke pieces.

My new after school club: '100 drawings: the BIG draw' kicked off last night with 22 children aged from 8 to 11 engaging in a workshop designed to introduce 100 kinds of drawing. We began with 20 different drawing techniques and soon there was a lively debate as we all contributed our ideas.

The children have designed this course themselves: it is only available to Cossington Primary at the moment but I will be feeding these resources into my event for WORLD COMMUNITY ARTS DAY in February next year!

B.O.S.C.A.P.S. (Barrow On Soar Community Association Play Scheme) has been running at Humphrey Perkins since the seventies and this year is the biggest ever intake- 350 children aged 5 to 13 arrived this morning in their green t-shirts, ready for a week of activities. Sports, dance, art, drama, circus skills- you name it we have it. My art rooms were full of colour- today was about flowers in paper, scraper boards, badge making, mosaics and bags. I can't believe that this is my 11th year!

Scraffito- heard of it? It is a method of layering plaster of paris onto a sturdy base, creating texture which may be built up, scratched away or texturised with other materials. Not an easy method at all- and the state of the rooms at the end of the day show why this isn't popular in schools or homes!! That IS what art camp is all about though0 trying new and experimental art forms! See the results for yourself, remembering that these are by children aged just 5 to 13.

Today was a wealth of experimental wonder! Children aged from 5 to 13 explored the skill of fusing papers and plastics to create whole books based on themes and colours.

To try this at home you will need an iron, greaseproof paper, plastic wallets or freezer/sandwich bags and a variety of threads, papers, fabric scraps and feathers. Arrange the items in the bag or wallet, making pictures or patterns. Place between two layers of greaseproof paper and iron to fuse. It's kind of like cheap laminating but nicer because the effects are less predictable.

If you are young, do not use an iron without an adult!!!!!!!!!!!!

Today was ace! We took over Humphrey Perkins Arts Theatre in Barrow on Soar for a giant art attack style project. Recreating iconic Pop Art paintings in fabric on a huge scale was something i'd wanted to try for ages.... thanks to an awesome group of year 8's the reality was even better than I'd imagined!

This is a project collaboration between Charnwwod Arts and Local Schools. Highgate students in year 5 and 6 created amazing hearts to be sold at the Sileby Art Festival! These will sell for £2 and the proceeds will go to the Church. As it is the 'heart' of Sileby.

Children at Redlands were the first to make HeArts for the Sileby festival in September. They did so well, stuffing and decorating them as well as adding rosemary to make them smell amazing! We meet on a Thursday from between 4 and 5pm and are always happy to meet new friends! After the summer we will be doing courses in Photography and Photo Crafts where children can learn the art and skill of photography as well as creating amazing pieces of art from their photos, plus there will be a wire modelling and jewellery course too. On Monday class 4 at Cossington Primary took part in a small workshop on the principle of respect. As well as a graffiti wall, they embroidered friendship bands with their own slogans, names or words. They did an incredible job in only an hour, with one girl making four bands!

Yesterday, me and Conor, my work experience placement for Rawlins' year 10 work experience week, put up the Quentin Blake inspired beaded birds, made over the past few weeks with children at Redlands Primary school in Sileby. We wired them to the new fences near the entrance to be enjoyed by pupils, staff and parents alike. Comments included "wow", "that's awesome" and "aw, that's really nice!", making our chilly afternoon well worth it!

After several bead threading sessions with chilldren aged from 4 to 11, we have finally started transformming the raw material (pictured below) into Quentin Blake syle birds (loosley based on his Roly-Poly Bird and the cockatoos). On Friday, these birds and more will be fixed onto the new fences at Redlands Primary School, Sileby, for all to see.

Tonight's after school club in Cossington focused on the Olympic value of EXCELLENCE and we linked that to stars and 'being a star'. We made origami stars and talked about Japan and it's excellence in creating origami, the Japanese art of paper folding. At the end, as it was so sunny, we took our stars and 'frizbeed' them across the field to see who's went the furthest!

I started this project on Wednesday at the Methodist church craft group. It's a banner in silk which depicts the whole story of the Bible, very abbreviated, from Genesis to the Resurrection!

Today, at Rawlins, I ran my first silk painting workshop for adults. Happily, we had a brilliant day and everyone who attended made two bookmarks, a painting to frame and a beautiful silk scarf. Tiffany glass, art nouveau and even Miro inspired a huge variety of designs and everyone experimented with colour mixing, paint effects and composition. The feedback was absolutely fantastic so I will certainly be doing another one in the near future.

The BIG JOB this week, for me and the years 5 and 6's of Burton Primary school, Leicestershire, has been to paint a giant wall mural based on ideas around the rainforest and jungle. Such a lot of hard work, sweat and paint has gone into it, mainly because we have to finish it TOMORROW! See what you think so far....

Friendship around the world

This evening, at Cossington Primary, a group of children made peg people with me, for our first of three sessions on the Olympic values of friendship, excellence and respect. This session, friendship, was a good excuse to make these fabulous people from around the world. Each participant made two people from different continents and acted out ways in which they could be friends- like internet, phone or travel.

This is my new venture through Rawlins- arty parties! Yesterday I did a 16 strong birthday party on caricatures....drawing all of the children (and parents!)and teaching everyone how to draw their own. It was a lot of fun and might just catch on!

recycled rainbow

At Rothley, a group of children have decided to make a recycled rainbow for their project with me! We are collecting coloured plastic recycling and cutting and threading it onto wire (kindly donated by the Candlestick factory in Sileby). This process is quite theraputic and it is building up really well. The rainbow will be big enough to walk through!

12 volunteers, 60 participants, a vat of marbelling inks, box of marker pens, two bags of clay, two dozen balls of wool and several boxes of beads made this year's World Community Arts Day absolutely amazing. All ages, all abilities, all together for six workshops in the art department at Rawlins. This event is made possible by the generous artists who give their time and expertise for free. Yesterday I ran a FREE art club for Rawlins staff's children aged from 5 to 12. We had 12 participants (and one mum!) and enjoyed a table-full of squiggly spiders, gargoyle faces and dotty doodling. It was such good fun, I will definitely offer this again!

Key stage 1 children (18 in all!) enjoyed a lovely art club last night on the subject of 'the world'. We took a round frame made of wire and filled it with tissue papers, foils and feathers to create colourful and expressive window hangings which either depicted our vision of the globe or ourselves in the world. The children, aged 6 and 7 absolutely amazed me with their creativity and ability.

The special thing about this club is that we are working towards an art exhibition I am organising at the International Voices event, De Montfort Hall.

3D art attacks! Starting NEXT THURSDAY!

Project based after school club allowing children and young people to work on larger scale projects based on some of the ‘Art Attack’ ideas. Each member of the group will be offered a range of choices and can spend as long as they need on any of the projects. They may also tackle as many projects as they wish! All materials and guidance will be provided. The choices will include:

‘Animal head’ set of shelves
Cute cottage
Fake cake
Octopus wall hanger
Egyptian cat door stop

As well as the above, each week we will introduce different techniques and ideas including ‘designing projects’, ‘drawing in 3D’, ‘painting effects’ and ‘constructing from cardboard’.

As ever, the participants will always be listened to and their requests included in the programme! This is suitable for all ages (from 5 and up) and projects will be tailored to the individual.

Christmas Art Camp 2010

We have now finished sweeping up the glitter in the art rooms at Rawlins, after an amazing two day Christmas crafts event. Between 20 and 30 children attended, aged between 5 and 13, making all manner of Christmas items, from felt stockings to pine cone candle holders. Look out for photos to follow!

Caricature workshop at Hind Leys

Last night I did a caricature workshop at Hind Leys with a drawing club, and staff. It was hilarious, as I drew everyone and everyone drew each other. Using two marker pens, one thick, one thin, and a stick of charcoal, it is amazing how you can achieve a likeness for someone. Capturing facial features and uniqueness doesn't have to be insulting, but what we look like is always something to celebrate. Thanks to all the good sports who are now immortalised on their teacher's wall at Hind Leys!!

Hello all,

As Rawlins prepares to close for Christmas, me and my art camp team are gearing up for a very busy two days! After some shopping and discussions over mugs of tea, the following schedule is our guideline for activities. Should be lots of fun!!!!

Wednesday:

1. clay (tea light holders, nativity scenes)
2. glitter printing
3. angels (made from pipe cleaners and beads)
4. cut out snowflakes
5. Christmas origami

Thursday:

1. Quilled window hangings
2. pine cone table centrepieces, wreaths and/or tree decorations
3. Felt sewn stockings
4. burnished silver gifts tags
5. Santa beards

Extra activities will include:

angel puppets, snow pictures on black card, wax resist snow pictures, stained glass windows, gift boxes, gift tags, Christmas cards

Glitter printing at Rawlins after school club

For our last session before Christmas we decided to make a real mess of the art room and put into practice a fantastically Christmassy activity- glitter printing. The technique involves block printing with water based printing ink onto a variety of surfaces and quickly sprinkling glitter and/or white sand onto the ink while it's wet. This causes the glitter and/or sand to stick and gives a very effective result. Try this with potato prints and acrylic paint if you don't have the equipment I have suggested.

Me and Amy are running two fun filled, craft packed days on Wednesday 22nd and Thursday 23rd of December from 10am to 4pm.

Come and sew Christmas stockings, make table centrepieces for the Christmas lunch, create amazing tree decorations, gift tags, Christmas wreaths and much more.

£14.50 per day for ages 5 and up.

How to make burnished silver gift tags and tree decs

Need: silver take-away lid, pencil, hole punch, black poster paint, ribbon or pipe cleaner, scissors

1. Draw an image onto the silver lid. Push down hard with the pencil so that the drawing is indented
2. Cut the picture out, leaving a gap all the way round it
3. Carefully hole punch the top
4. Drip a little black poster paint onto a plate and dip your finger in. Rub the paint into the indentations of your drawing. Keep rubbing in all directions until the effect of burnished silver is achieved
5. Thread your ribbon or pipe cleaner through the hole. This can now be used for a tree decoration or a gift tag!

Animation project

Year 4's have become expert animators this week at Highgate school in Sileby. Creating storyboards and amazing sets from paper, card and home-made playdough (thanks Mrs P!) they worked in groups with Rawlins' imacs and cameras to produce animations about Pompeii. What a lovely week!

Recycling plastic boxes and decorating them with pressed leaves from St. Bartholomew's school garden was the task on Wednesday after school. My lovely 15 strong group had carefully selected leaves which had been pressed and went to work crafting small boxes from donations made from an office clear out. This fine example shows how attractive the Autumn colours and textures were.

Arts Award student has jewellery in shop window!

Charlotte Noon, 18, has had a range of her hand made jewellery bought by 'Libby's' in Quorn. In a stunning shop front display, her red necklace looks incredible. We are so incredibly proud of her!

World art gets all fine arty!

Seagrave Globe is complete (except for installation!)

This huge metal globe is incredibly difficult to do justice with a camera. The scale and detail are incredible but hard to see here. It is going to be erected at the front of Seagrave Village Primary school very soon with an exciting launch event. The children who made is are aged just 7 to 11 years and their hard work has created this ball of stories and images which tell of their global links and world-wide friendships.

Seagrave globe project begins!

The ingredients of this project:

Ten gifted and talented children aged 7 to 11. One steel frame. Many metres of assorted wire. Imagination.

This huge, ambitious sculpture is going to depict Seagrave's multi-cultural links. The children are designing and making wire drawings of all kinds of images related to the theme. I am wiring them all onto a globe.

Rustic, cultural clay tiles

World Art week two:

These tiles are made from layering air dry clay onto large ceramic tiles. The children looked at relief images from Africa and India and recreated them. They used wooden beads to decorate.

Wild flower nature reserve created by group

This week we learnt about wild flowers and the fact that they are often preserved in this country on grass verges. We looked at books and talked about what we knew about them. Then we all worked together to create a grass verge full of flowers. It got wild, with 15 participants and piles of tissue paper, but amazingly, here is the wonderful result!

My new after school club 'WORLD ART' takes inspiration from art and craft traditions from around the world. To launch to club tonight, we looked at carnivals and masks from Italy, Africa, Mexico and Beijing.

Inspiration is taken from trees, plants, birds and insects for this new after school club at St Bartholomew's Primary school in Quorn. 15 participants aged from 7 to 11 this week studied local bugs and carefully painted them in detail onto pebbles.

Puppets!

These simple stick and ball puppets provided the opportunity for children to express different ideas about character and personality. They had a whole table of fabric scraps to choose from and spent some of the day deciding on who would take which role in a collaborative play. The end result was hilarious and so entertaining, including children as young as 5 working with 10 year olds on the same show.

Spider webs

This activity is loosly based on the Mexican 'God's Eye' weaving tradition, except we made it look like a spider web. The sticks are black painted dowelling and the web is purple wool. The spider is made from a painted paper spun ball with wire for legs (taped on with black tape) and the eyes are fake jewels, glued.

Monday Art Camp

Art camp: day 1. Not that many kids today (I think a lot of people are on holiday), which made for a really calm and creative atmosphere. We merged groups and the first activity was 'Cloaks and daggers' which included making cloaks to wear and painting swords or daggers onto acrylic board, with elements of foil to create silver effects.

Later, we all made Solomon's Rings and pendants- very stately and colourful! We finished with hanging pumpkin faces to display in our windows.

Tomorrow we are planning some clay and candle work as well as a sewing afternoon!

YES, art camp starts again on Monday..phew- it's half term already?

This 5 day event promises to be packed full of amazing activities, from dragon's heart string staffs to celestrial pillow making and silhouette light displays to Arthur's legendary sword paintings. There will be something for everyone: a chance to experiment with many kinds of materials and ideas in the creative environment of an art room at Rawlins. All of the staff are dedicated artists and workshop leaders.

Children can come on a day only basis and enrol online in advance. Just go onto Rawlins Community College's website and follow the links.

Mural is completed!

We were delighted to arrive at the nursery on Thursday evening to a room full of happy faces and a thank you card from the children. We asked them all about their favourite parts of the mural and who they would like to be. Not one of them would have changed anything about it and before we left they presented us with flowers and chocolates to thank us!

What a brilliant project with a wonderful group of people. HUGE thanks to the Rawlins students who painted this amazing piece and the staff and children at Little Apples Day Nursery on Cossington Road in Sileby.
